Optical frequency comb technology has been successfully used as an ultra-precise frequency ruler in frequency metrology, but it also provides powerful tools in broad areas. By precisely controlling the frequency and the phase of optical frequency combs, metrology applications with ultra-high accuracy with ultra-wide dynamic range, multi-dimensionality, and versatile controllability can be achieved. This paper presents the development of various metrology applications of optical frequency combs using such attractive features. First, we extended the dual-comb technique to the time-domain and the coherent spectroscopy of solids and developed a versatile spectroscopy technique for the rapid, high-precision, wide-dynamic range measurements as well as the full characterization of a broad range of materials. Next, using a rapid and highly accurate dimensional conversion based on an optical frequency comb, a novel method for ultrafast one-shot 3D imaging with high-accuracy and wide-range is presented. With versatile multi-dimensional controllability, broad application fields remain open to the comb.
