Abstract

A disk shape solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) offers a large degree of freedom in choice of the flow pattern, and flow uniformity is promoted by installing circle involute current collectors in the disk shape channel. Furthermore, the number of current collector and its material play the important role of the flow uniformity. In this study, a swirling flow phenomena in a model channel of the disk shape SOFC with porous wall current collectors were experimentally investigated using a particle image velocimetry (PIV). The experiment was performed at low flow rate to simulate the practical operation of the disk shape SOFC. In the case of applying five circle involute shape current collectors made of semi-permeable porous material, the swirling flow velocity in a core region was kept at nearly constant value toward the channel exit. Moreover, a velocity component normal to the current collector had positive value due to the gas flow permeating porous metal, and discrepancy from the streamline along the involute curve was observed.
