Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of obesity and associated risk factors in individuals with intellectual disabilities in residential facilities. Overall, 92 individuals with intellectual disabilities (61 men, 31 women) participated in this study. Height, body weight, waist circumference, % body fat, blood pressure (BP), fasting -blood glucose and -total cholesterol of the participants were measured. Daily physical activity level was evaluated by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Body mass index (BMI) and energy expenditure evaluated by IPAQ were calculated. Percentage body fat in women (35.1±7.8%) was significantly higher than in men (20.3±7.8%, p<0.001), whereas no differences in BMI were observed between men and women. Waist circumference was highly correlated with BMI or % body fat in either men or women, respectively (R2=0.76–0.87, all p<0.05). Moreover, the number of participants who have a waist circumference >85 cm in men and >95 cm in women (approximately abdominal visceral fat area >100 cm2) was 33 (54%) in men and 9 (29%) in women. There are no significant differences in BPs, blood glucose and total cholesterol. Amount of physical activity per week in men was significantly greater than in women (p<0.05). These results suggest that despite the similar values in BPs and biomarkers between the sexes, marked sex difference exhibits in the prevalence of obesity and physical activity levels in individuals with intellectual disabilities.
