Description

To discuss future trail management in mountain national parks, this study conducted trail analysis in Cuihuashan National Geopark. The trails were divided into five types based on tread materials. The hardened trails (concrete, flagstone and boulder types) attained 86.8% but had no erosion. On the other hand, meadow and bare-ground type trails had soil erosion. Mountain national-park managers in developed countries should not reject the Chinese approach, but adopt varied measures depending on the trail sections classified by grading system. In China, visitors and managers need to reconsider if the high percentage of hardened trails should be kept or not.
