Abstract

This paper empirically examines how and which Work-life Balance (WLB) programs affect promotion in Japanese companies, and further, which ones affect the promotion level which controlling for the endogeneity of introducing and using WLB programs. The results reveal that companies employing promote WLB programs, ensure work place assistance (from superiors and co-workers), and facilitate childcare leave for men tend to shorten the delayed period of promotion. Regarding the relationship between the degree of promotion and use of WLB programs, the degree of promotion is significantly increased in the case of men who use childcare leave from a half year to one year. On the other hand, in the case of women, the use of childcare leave from a half year to one year decreases the degree of promotion. “Kurumin mark” authentication has an effect not to let a delay of the promotion prolong and functions effectively. It is necessary to promote the childcare leave of short run for promotion of the childcare leave for men. For women, it is effective to promote the appointment of women in management positions to promote the childcare leave for the policy.
