Description

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between moral sense theory and utilitarianism in Francis Hutcheson's moral philosophy.
It has been argued by some scholars that Hutcheson treated moral sense and utilitarianism as different and separated principles by which we make moral judgements, which sometimes leads to insistence that there is an inconsistency in his moral theory. This paper points out some problems with this kind of interpretation and illustrates how Hutcheson's utilitarianism is derived from the moral sense theory through textual analysis.
