Abstract

In this research, focusing on the area severely damaged by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, we compared the extent of earthquake and tsunami aftermath and changes of car ownerships. Motorization rate defined as the number of automobiles per 1000 inhabitants tends to increase proportionally to the extent of the aftermath in Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures. In these prefectures, the share of smaller automobiles were higher compared to the national average, and the earthquake triggered a further shift towards smaller automobiles. We also compared the reconstruction and additional construction process of motorways and the reconstruction process of conventional railways in the region, as well as the road density in inhabitable areas. The result shows that the road infrastructure is rapidly reconstructed and even extended during the reconstruction process, and the road density tend to increase proportionally to the extent of the damage. At large, these results implies increasing automobile dependency in the coastal areas of Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures along with the changes in transport infrastructures made through the reconstruction process.
