Description

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the thoughts and experiences of spousal couples regarding the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) process. METHOD: The subjects were 10 couples who had undergone NIPT. They were interviewed three times about their thoughts and experiences on pregnancy and testing: when pregnancy was confirmed, when waiting for the result after NIPT, and when they heard the result. Interview contents were coded, collected according to content similarity, and categorized. RESULTS: The wives were not only happy with pregnancy, but also worried about miscarriage and fetal health, and told themselves “It'll probably go well” before the test result. There were also wives “suppressing her attachment to the fetus” and “feeling conflict over selecting fetus life”. On hearing the test results, both husband and wife were relieved, but the wives said “that's just one thing less to worry about”. CONCLUSION: It became clear that wives and husbands had feelings in common and also feelings that differed. It is important to provide support so that the husband and wife can share various feelings and thoughts between them in order to reach a mutual decision. This is the role of genetic counseling.
