Attempts are described on sterilization for previously found rubber-like poly (vinyl alcohol) gel : Irradiating by gamma rays from Cobalt-60 in the range of 3〜5 Mrad, no deterioration is observed on mechanical properties of sterilized gels. For trial, artificially contaminated specimens were prepared by treating preaseptic gels with culture-broth for 5 days at 31℃, then were subjected to immersing in aqueous chlorhexidine (0.1%) for 4 days at 37℃, and washig away the adsorbed disinfectant : All the specimens were proved to be sterile according to the official standard culture of incubating for 7 days at 31℃ (for bacteria), or for 10 days at room temperatures (for fungi, yeasts). The prescribed potassium permanganate consumption of warm extracting water layer separated from the irradiated or disinfected specimens remained in the range of 0.1〜0.4 ml, which is far below the restrivted value (2.0 ml) of the standard testing for medical materials.
