Abstract

Nutrients from wastewater treatment plants during seasonal operation are supplied to sea areas used for seaweed aquaculture. We investigated water quality to clarify the behavior of the nutrient and Salinity. NH4-N concentrations were found to be increased in the sea area. Specifically, many nutrients from wastewater treatment plants were found to be supplied to the seaweed aquaculture area along a fairway reaching approximately 9 km from the plants. Thus, the seasonal operation of wastewater treatment plants in October-March for nitrification control is contributing to the supply of nutrients to the seaweed aquaculture sea area. The influence of sea water freshening is included within the range of natural fluctuation, as is that of influent river water. The direct influence of sewage effluent on sea water freshening is relatively low.
