Abstract

In this article, authors re-examine the concept of Kyosei / Kyoso by co-writing a collaborative autoethnography. Firstly, OKAWA discusses that the current praxis of Kyosei is benefiting only the privileged population in the society. In addition, OKAWA adds representation issues by giving his own example as a Nikkei Brazilian Scholar, which oftentimes causes marginalization from both communities of Nikkei Brazilians and Japanese academics. OKAWA claims that he feels like he is obliged to fit himself into the boxes which are created by the vast majority. Secondly, KATADA argues that there is an unequal “Systematic eugenics” in academia which is created by the people in power. KATADA experienced the “Systematic eugenics” in the selection process and Mirai Kyousei Program for the RESPECT program which was supposed to include the minorities. Also he explained how the space for a dialogue had been changing by the privileged. Thirdly, NAKADA visualizes the difficulty of preserving the safe space for minorities to speak up their voices. NAKADA quoted an ominous comment sent privately that s/he did not want to hear the To j i s h a stories (the voices of the minorities) anymore in a discussion about Kyosei (Co-existence). Finally, we concluded that it is important to 1. hear the unheard voices of the minorities, 2. recognize the existence of their unconscious privileges which majorities and “experts” have, that will definitely lead to explore the possibility that we can truly co-create the “Kyosei / Kyoso” future together.
