Abstract

Stapedial tinnitus is one of the sequelae of facial nerve palsy, and is caused by misdirection between the motor fibers that innervate the facial muscles and the stapedial muscle. When the patient moves the facial muscles, the stapedial muscle contracts, and the patient becomes aware of tinnitus. The non-acoustic stapedial reflex test provides a recording of the tympanic membrane compliance when the facial muscles move in the absence of acoustic stimulations. An impedance audiometer was used in the manual mode. We were able to diagnose stapedial tinnitus in three cases by this test. This is a simple, reproducible, and excellent objective audiological examination tool. Stapedial tinnitus is a condition in which even the normal pleasures of daily life, such as eating and talking, become painful. Most of the patients give a past history of severe facial nerve palsy and often have residual paralysis, synkinesis, and tinnitus, three painful symptoms in daily life. If stapedial tendon resection can eliminate even one painful symptom, the patient's quality of life would improve, and it must always be offered as a treatment option.
