Description

The actual sea model basin at the National Maritime Research Institute is the largest wave basin for model ship tests in Japan. One of the best features is that it is equipped with 382 wave generators all around the basin, and it is possible to reproduce waves of the actual sea in the basin by using the wave generator and wave generation technology. Here, in order to carry out various model tests to evaluate the performance and safety of ships and marine structures in waves, we are also developing wave generation technology that meets each need. In the actual sea model basin, it is possible to generate unique waves that draw characters and patterns on the water surface by applying the wave generator installed around the basin and the wave generation technology that controls the waves as desired. In this paper, various wave basins for model ship tests and wave generators are introduced, and the wave generation technology for drawing characters and patterns on the water surface with waves in the actual sea model basin is explained.
