Abstract

Spaced Retrieval (SR) is an errorless learning-based memory training strategy consisting of presenting subjects with a piece of information and asking them to recall it after gradually increasing intervals. Conventional-face-to-face SR training is already used by therapists, however, recently there is a growing need for telemedicine and home-based training. In this paper, we present a new memory training application for tablets based on the SR method. In this app, subjects sequentially perform SR tasks and other cognitive tasks.SR tasks consist of custom-made questions and explanations, including both images and texts. A feasibility study conducted in healthy community-dwelling elderly people found that they could remain concentrated on the cognitive task for approximately 15 minutes, but some participants experienced displeasure with abrupt pop-up questions. The app interface was appropriate for intuitive operation by the elderly, but an improvement in the presentation method of repetitive questions would be required.
