Abstract

Using Kashiwa City’s NPO and Kokubunji City’s network-type organization as the cases, a comparative analysis was conducted to identify characteristics and issues of a support for the urban agriculture’s distribution outside the wholesale market by community development organizations. The key results are as follows: 1) While Kashiwa’s NPO mainly focused on the support for direct sales, Kokubunji’s support had more variety; 2) While Kashiwa’s NPO promoted establishing civic business organizations, Kokubunji’s network evolved into a collection of businesses set up by individuals; 3) While Kashiwa’s NPO succeeded in stabilizing the support, diversification of leading actor was needed. Although Kokubunji’s network could provide flexible and agile support, improving profitability and stabilizing support remained as key issues.
