Abstract

<p>  The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize the achievements and future issues of the studies of biopsychosocial risks of dementia among old Japanese. We performed a systematic search of the Ichushi-Web and PubMed databases and hand-searching. Thirty-four studies published after 2007 met inclusion criteria. Eighty per cent of the total reviews were longitudinal studies. We found that the associations between dementia and biopsychosocial factors, including the number of remaining teeth, Japanese food, walking time as biological factors, depression as psychological factors, and social participation and social support as social factors. Furthermore, we found many studies shown the associations between social ties and dementia, and the originality of some research, including developing risk scores for the prediction of the incidence of dementia and studies in areas in which natural disasters have occurred. </p><p>  Further studies will be expected to conduct social science research at not only the individual level, but to clarify social and environmental factors in different regions and societies and at different times. It is necessary to show evidence to consider new strategies and social policies for the prevention of dementia.</p>
