Abstract

The cataloging unit defined in the four editions of NCR is examined. Both 1952 and 1965 editions of NCR refer to a work as a cataloging unit. However, neither editions clearly define when they deal with multi-works. NCR 1977 edition treats a physical unit of a work as the cataloging unit while the 1987 edition does tankousho (a work with a distinctive title) as the unit. They do not differ even when they deal with multi-works. The author proposes tankou bunken as a cataloging unit, which is, in an author's word, a bibliographical unit when a work is published as a single piece.
