Abstract

In the libraries in the United States of America(U.S.A.), separation of professional and nonprofessional duties had been established, and the situation was introduced to Japan. However, no detailed research on the developmental process of the separation of duties was done both in the U.S.A. and Japan. <br> The purpose of this study is to clarify the process and factors of the separation of duties in the public libraries in U.S.A. For this study, literatures on the separation of duties are gathered and analyzed.<br> As the results of this study, following facts were elucidated. <br> 1) There were two processes in the separation of duties, namely one movement was to make position classification plan and the other was to make list of duties. <br> 2) In order to make position classification plan properly, list of duties was made, and ratio of professional and nonprofessional duties was clarified. <br> 3) Guide rules and practice of the separation of duties were incorporated into A.L.A.'s public library standards being established in 1956. <br> From the results mentioned above, it was elucidated that bases of the separation of duties was established during 1920s to 1950s.
