Abstract

This paper aims to resituate the problem of leadership that has largely been forgotten in contemporary democratic theories. This attempt will inevitably involve reassessing liberal democratic theories because they have bypassed questions on leaders and leadership based on the premise of an open civil society and the spontaneous participation of citizens in the democratic processes. However, as many scholars have pointed out, there is an inherent dilemma in the very nature of democratic leadership: while the ideal of democracy demands radical equality among citizens, leadership introduces a vertical relationship and inequality between a leader and his or her followers. This paper therefore tries to bring the leader back into the discussion on democracy by considering some of the attempts made to resolve this aporia. Not only is the return of leaders a threat to liberal democracy, but it is also the clue to strengthening it.
