Abstract

Field smoky brown cockroaches in an outdoor wood hollow were observed in 2017. They had just overwintered in the hollow as nymphs in April and reached the adult stage in July and August. A triangular sheet of Kent paper with 7 tablets of food was placed in the entrance space of the wood hollow on April 30, June 7, July 6, and August 4, and the responses of cockroaches were recorded on photographs taken every 2 minutes using an auto-interval shutter camera for an hour or more from just before sunset. Nymphs usually began to appear on the paper from a few minutes after sunset. Most of the overwintered nymphs had fully grown in July, and more than half individuals had emerged into adults in August. The results indicate that even smaller overwintered nymphs would emerge into adults within this season, to say nothing of large nymphs. Therefore, the conventional estimation that the once overwintered smaller nymphs would overwinter again at the fully grown stage (Tsuji and Taneike, 1990; Tsuji, 2016a, b) should be revised.
