Abstract

We propose an analytical model for IEEE 802.11 DCF based wireless LANs, in which mobile terminals send frames of different lengths or on different transmission rates. The proposed model expresses the state of the terminal in a few macro states and describes the state transition by a continuous time Markov chain. The channel occupation time during the collision is equal to the transmission time of the longest frame among those encountering the collision. Thus, for the analysis of the channel occupation time during the collision, we need to consider all combinations of terminals transmitting frames, and the number of combinations explodes as the number of terminals increases. In this paper, we show how to rigorously evaluate channel occupation time during collision with scalable computational complexity.
