The purpose of this paper was to overview the discussion on characteristics of “good” Japanese language teachers over the last 40 years. In the field of Japanese language education, those kinds of discussion started in 1970’s, and the issues have been changing from time to time depending on the social situation. In this paper, the transition of the issues on the qualities of “good” teachers was clarified through analyzing investigation reports by relevant ministries and agencies, the Japanese language teaching competency test, and the discussion on qualities of “good” teachers in articles related to Japanese language education.
