The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of three motivation and experience factors (importance estimation, interpersonal motivation, and social interaction experiences) and three personality traits (social skill, affiliation motivation and shyness) on negative interpersonal affect (NIA) reduction. A longitudinal study of 241 male and female university or nursing school freshmen was conducted for a three-week interval at the beginning of a school year. During two sessions, the participants were asked to focus on a target person in order to rate motivation and experience factors towards the person as well as personality traits. A multiple regression analysis was performed. The evidence showed that regarding motivation and experience factors, the more the relationship was estimated important, the higher the increase of "hatred/incompatibility". And, the higher the "motive for maintenance" was rated, the more "threat" increased. However, no personality trait effects were found on NIA reduction.
