Description

It is well known that children learn prosocial behavior over a period of time by observing adults around them help each other. This implies that children would behave prosocially in a community whose collective efficacy is high. Moreover, previous studies have reported that affective ties within the community to which the children belong stimulate their social development. Hence, in this paper, we aim to reveal the effect of collective efficacy and attachment to the community on children's prosocial behavior. The responses of 1696 junior high school students were used in the analysis. The results showed that trust and cooperation within neighborhoods enhanced the attachment of the children to the community, which in turn promoted prosocial behavior. The control of problematic behavior by the local residents neither affected the children's attachment to the local community nor the prosocial behavior. This research introduced a new viewpoint of the regional community in the study of children's prosocial behavior, which has mainly been discussed in terms of parent-child or peer relationship.
