Description

Our research objective was to investigate the knowledge and image of counselors (clinical psychologists) among students. University students (n=46) completed a written questionnaire about their knowledge of counseling as an occupation and their image of counselors. The image-related responses we sought focused particularly on appearance and looks. Classification of the results by the KJ method indicated that the majority had knowledge of counseling-related occupational duties and fields of work, that the perceived work of counselors was to listen and provide psychological support, and that the perceived image of counselors was that of a kind, calm, and gentle personality. Responses regarding appearance and looks showed that they had an image of counselors as female, with clean clothing, hairstyles, and makeup. These responses indicated that university students had broad knowledge of counselors and a generally favorable image of their occupation.
