Description
A change in the painting style of Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889-1953) can be observed in his work from the 1940s as a result of his experience using casein around 1939. Following the transition of Kuniyoshi's paintings I analyzed his production based on my own examination of his oil paintings and works using casein from the 1940s considering how special characteristics of painting materials derived from his experience with casein were applied to later works and taken advantage of and what their effect was on pictorial space. Works in the 1930s were thickly painted and decorated with materials for artistic effect and showed motifs such as indoor scenery people still life etc. In the 1940s a change appeared in his style. Special characteristics of Kuniyoshi's casein painting works such as the brightness of its colors the expression of shades and depth using multilayering of transparencies and thinly mixed paints the emphasis on flatness by juxtaposing colored faces started to appear in his oil paintings after the 1940s. Compared to his oil painting work of the 1930s in his oil paintings after the 40s the pictorial space seems to be visually suggesting depth due to the effect of the colors and materials. This led to the conclusion that the characteristics of drawing materials obtained through Kuniyoshi's experience with casein were applied to his oil paintings.
