Abstract

Self-responsibility discourse is the notion of language communication discussing self-responsibility in Japan. This study analyzes the semiotic features and the ideology from the view point of linguistic anthropology. Ziko-sekinin is an abstract and compound noun. “Ziko (self)” and “sekinin (responsibility)” cannot be defined essentialistically. This study considers ziko-sekinin as an indistinct used in diverse contexts in Japan. This article tries to utilize a method of Discourse Analysis of historical sociology framework as well as Linguistic Anthropology in order to analyze self-responsibility discourse to capture the transformation of discourse in Japanese society. Using ethnography and discourse analysis to analyze the social field, the paper presents the analytical notion of “type” which is a meta-pragmatic category and separate the types of self-responsibility discourses into 8 types and analyzes the examples of those discourses. Based on the results, I arugue that the transformation of self-responsibility discourse lies in the sense of Japanese self-consciousness and the norm consciousness.
