Abstract

According to Brown and Levinson’s (1978, 1987) politeness theory, the weightiness of a face threatening act (Wx) is calculated as Wx = D(S,H) + P(H,S) + Rx. Within this framework, the present study intended to clarify not only the structure and change of politeness factors but also its awareness by Chinese university students using multiple conditions of rejecting a request in L1 Chinese and L2 Japanese. As a baseline for comparison, the study also investigated native Japanese speakers. Notably, four factors were assumed to influence the degree of difficulty rejecting a request: social distance (D), power relations (P), context of the request situation (Rsit), and language and cultural differences (Rl&c). A regression tree analysis revealed the strength of influence for multiple factors, indicating that strongest factor was social distance (D), followed by power relations (P), and then context of the situation (Rsit). Although the language and culture factor (Rl&c) significantly interacted with other factors, its effect was weaker and more varied as a result of the situational factor (Rsit).
