  • Descriptive Research of the Adverb : “kitto” in Modern Japanese

抄録

Modern Japanese Adverb Kitto have been studied vigorously, focusing on the viewpoint of the various usage and similarity to other Japanese Adverb such as Kanarazu. Although, previous studies reveal that Kitto tends to co-occur with the assertive form of the verb, few studies have focused on the co-occurrence relation. It is significant to investigate the co-occurrence with the assertive form because the co-occurrence is related to grammatical characteristics of Kitto. This paper surveys the actual usage of Kitto in Modern Japanese, so as to investigate the co-occurrence with the assertive form. From the survey on usage and the co-occurrence relation of Kitto, we clarify the followings three aspects: (1) Kitto tends to co-occur with the assertive form, as previous studies pointed out, (2) the usage of Kitto can be classified according to the condition of sentence such as co-occurring mood and person, (3) Kitto can be used in the process recognized by speaker, not only not-recognized by speaker. Lastly, we focused on the cognitive meanings of the assertive form and found that the usage of conjecture and habit are in opposition in terms of cognitive aspects. It is assumed that the opposition is significant to investigate the historical development of Kitto showed by previous studies.
