An artistic movement in Germany from about 1895 until about 1910 was called “Jugendstil” which took its name from the art journal “Jugend” founded by the German artist George Hirth. Many graphic artists produced illustrations for this journal, and one of the most important artist was Otto Eckmann. The style of his graphic illustrations were often inspired by nature, plants and flowers, and it was called “floral style”, whose illustrations combined sinuous curves. These Jugendstil-illustrations in the floral style showed us the vitality of plants which was similar to the French Art Nouveau, but the artists tried to break out of its mold and discover a new style. This paper is intended to describe the meaning of the “floral style” and the porpose of the graphic artists (floalist) with their illustrations of plants.
