To clarify an impact of bending stem on ornamental value in cut tulip flowers, consumer evaluation test was conducted using two cultivars, 'Ile de France' and 'Ballerina'. In cut 'Ile de France' tulip of which the stem bent over 30 degrees due to marked elongation 2 days after anthesis, visible freshness scores were decreased significantly than that of 'Ile de France' tulips with non-elongated stem. Forty-four percent of consumers judged that this tulip flower was valueless. 2-Chloroethylphosphonic acid (CEPA) treatment inhibited stem elongation and contributed to keeping high level of ornamental value. None of consumers judged that the CEPA-treated 2-day tulip flower should be discarded. Our results suggested that ornamental value of cut 'Ile de France' tulip flowers is decreased by stem elongation and bending before signs of tepal senescence become visible. In another cultivar, 'Ballerina', visible freshness scores were also decreased significantly due to the stem which bent over 30 degrees. However, only 20.6 percent of consumers judged that the stem bending tulip flowers was valueless. Thus, the influences of stem bending on ornamental values may be different among tulip cultivars.
