Abstract

By analyzing 80 practicum sessions given by JFL student teachers, this paper outlines the skills needed for the effective explanation of basic Japanese grammar. The conclusion offers eight examples that demonstrate the following four criteria of explanatory effectiveness:  1. Appropriate visual aids and materials should be introduced during the grammatical explanations.  2. Explanations should be repeated to ensure students have understood.  3. A blackboard and panels should be used to explain sentence structure.  4. To make sure of the understanding the sentence structures the explanations for that should have timely use of a blackboard and panels.
