Abstract
In pastoral theology, pastoral practices undergo critical theological reflection. Pastoral practices, the experience of community, and theological interpretation are mutually engaged in critical reflection to generate a pastoral theology. This paper provides an overview of three approaches to Protestant pastoral theology found in the United States since the 1980s―the communal-contextual approach, feminist approach, and intercultural approach―by examining how each approach can be used to interpret the contemporary world and its problems. It further describes the characteristics and theological method of each approach. In her concluding remarks, the author discusses the pressing issues that pastoral theologies currently face and the possible future directions of pastoral theology.
