Description
There are 1,126 universities in Japan, and 49 out of them have acquired the certification of ISO14001 until June 2005. Those universities are mainly located in Kanto and Tokai districts; there is no certificated university in Osaka Prefecture. Respective universities have structured their own environmental management system (EMS). Some private universities have taken an integral certification with fellow universities under the sama manager's environmental polocy. University of Fukui, Shibaura Institute of Technology and Okinawa University have structured the advenced and characteristic EMS. Based in the detailed examination in the EMS of the three universities, it was found that environmental activities of University of Fukui are performance-oriented like private manufactures while activities of Shibaura Institute of Technology and Okinawa University are plus-oriented. To promote ISO14001 ceryification of many other universities, it is convenient that national universities of local governments take lead of certification and open their EMS niformation to other universities.
