抄録

The purpose of this paper is to show a unique contribution of RICEC for education and childhood studies from cultural anthropological point of view in Japan. The Research Institute of comparative Education and Culture (RICEC), usually called "Hiken" in Japanese, was founded in 1955 for the purpose of undertaking theoretical as well as empirical research of comparative education. Soon the division of cultural anthropological studies was added it and made a unique contribution to the glocalization of educational anthropology and the development of empirical studies of education and culture in Japan as the only national research institute in this field. The institute traditionally has placed an emphasis on area studies of educational culture mainly in Asian countries and the characteristics of the research undertaken by RICEC are as the following : 1. International and cross-cultural perspectives 2. Interdisciplinary approaches 3. Field work in another cultures/societies In the RICEC, especially the division of Anthropological studies for the socio-cultural contexts of formal/in (non) formal education system played a unique and important role Not only as an introducer of educational anthropology in Japan but also as a pioneer of childhood study from cultural anthropological point of view.
