(1) Most house builders operates as small businesses and has only a few employed carpenters, averaging over forty years old. (2) Although the share of large scale house builders is only 5 per cent according to number of company, they have a 40 % share of housing construction. They employ younger carpenters than smaller builders, and are emphasize the quality control of timber and traditional wood structure houses. The largest timber purchasing method used by house builders is from timber retailers (55 %)from saw mills (20 %) and third from the retail market (10 %). (4) There are 4 types of timber dealers : retailers, saw mills, timber auction markets and a retail market in the Oita district. Most timber dealers operate as very small businesses. But larger scale dealers have almost a half share of housing construction, although numerically they represent only 10 per cent of dealers. (5) As same dealers operate as saw mills, they use their own products. Many dealers buy domestic timber through timber auction markets in the local district. and foreign timber through saw mills outside the prefecture. 60 % of dealing timber are soled to house builders, and 67 % is used as material in traditional wood structure house building. (6) Larger scale timber dealers have their own timber sources, with which they develop their sales potential and timber quality control and sales potential. As a result they maintain a connection with regional large scale builders. (7) Regional large scale builders select timber dealers. Through this selection method, they can get high quality timber and develop the quality of their houses and sales potential. (8) We can see a changing structure in the local timber market, accompanying the formation of regional large scale builders. We must monitor the development of these builders, in order to regulate the domestic timber processing and distribution system.
