The aim of this paper is twofold. It is an attempt to capture the films directed by SASABE Kiyoshi as an artistic expression of sincere and profound "gratitude". The paper also provides a standard sample of a term paper for "The World of Movies", an elective class organized by the author under the category of general education at Kyushu University. This thesis analyzes all his movies, Hi Wa mata Noboru (Dawn of a New Day - The J.V.C. Story), Chirusoku no Natsu (Summer of Chirusoku) , Hanochi (Half a Confession), Yokkakan no Kiseki (Miracle in Four Days), Kaaten Kooru (Curtain Call) and Deguchi no nai Umi (Sea without Exit) and claims that Yokkakan no Kisehi, in spite of its unpopularity, forms an important turning point in his filmography. His three films earlier than the dividing line modestly depict their characters' thankfulness to people around them, what they live for, life itself, and the like, apart from their motifs. Yokkakan no Kiseki, however, holds gratefulness as its main theme and strongly suggests the significance of stating thanks clearly to other people. The author considers it natural that SASABE Kiyoshi, after completing a film with a clear message which was implicit in his earlier works, go on to pay homage to movies themselves for acting as his precious mode of expression (Kaaten Kooru), emphasize the importance of peace thanks to which films could be produced (Deguchi no nai Umi), and depict atomic bombs, the most devastating threat to peace (Yuunagi no Machi, Sakura no Kuni, to be released in the summer of 2007).
