Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze the effects of compliment, which is a kind of technique in Solution Focused Brief Therapy, in imaginary scenes of counseling, considering the subjects' psychological traits. For the above purpose, factor analysis of questionnaire responses from 176 college students was performed. The questionnaire covered (1) experiment of counseling scale, (2) praise seeking and rejection avoidance need scales, and (3) the approach to the problem after counselling, by using four types of compliments : respecting the effort, suggesting the internal resource, suggesting the external resource, and understanding the difficulty. Factor analysis of experiment of counseling scale yielded two factors: focusing on solution and reliance on counselor. The score of focusing on solution was larger in suggesting internal resource, and the score of reliance on a counselor was larger in suggesting internal resource. Additionally, a higher score of praise seeking need resulted in, a higher score of focusing on solution, in respecting the effort, and suggesting the internal resource. Moreover, on getting complimented for understanding the difficulty, majority of people had to put in fewer efforts to solve the problem. These findings show the effectiveness of optimizing the contents of compliment, considering the purpose of therapy.
