Abstract

We present the reaction of gas-phase free clusters with compositions similar to silica (SinOm-) and silicates (Mgl SiOm-)withH2OandCOmoleculestoinvestigatechemistryinspace.ItwasfoundthatadsorptionofH2OonMglSiOm- isfollowedbymolecularoxygenrelease.ForSinOm-,H2Oadductwasobservedasamajorreactionproduct,whereH2O wasdissociativelyadsorbedonSinOm- toformtwoSiO3(OH)tetrahedra.InthereactionofSinOm- withCO,adsorption of CO was observed as a major reaction channel, which could be a first step in organic molecule formation. A pair of dangling O atoms in SinOm- was the reaction site. The present findings give molecular-level insight into chemical evolution during the planetary formation process.
