説明

With the aim of increasing their vegetable intake at home, we held a quiz & stamp rally for children to learn about vegetable nutrition while enjoying answering quizzes and collecting original vegetable character stamps during a food education event in a community. We also conducted a questionnaire survey, involving parents of 83 children (aged 2-12 years) who participated in the rally, to examine the vegetable intake of these children. For the question <Do you think your child is eating adequately?>, 50.6% of all parents chose <Yes>, which was the highest rate. The rate of choosing < Inadequate > was 27.2%. For <Is your child eating enough vegetable?>, the majority of the parents chose <Too little>, at 49.4%, and the rate of choosing <Enough> was 27.2%, revealing a variation in parental recognition between dietary and vegetable intakes. On comparing answers to <What is the difficulty in having your child eat vegetables?> between parents of younger children (aged 2-6: younger group) and those of older children (7-12: older group), <My child refuses/does not eat vegetables he/she hates to eat> achieved the highest rate, at 58.9%, in the younger group, while it was 26.9% in the older group, revealing a difference (p=0.007). <Vegetables are expensive> achieved 7.1 and 26.9% in the younger and older groups, respectively, revealing a difference (p=0.014). On the other hand, the rate of choosing <My child’s vegetable intake is too little> exceeded 25% in both cases; 33.9 and 26.9% in the younger and older groups, respectively. <My vegetable cooking repertoire is limited> and <I don’t know child-friendly vegetable recipes> achieved approximately 20% in both groups. The parents’ impressions of the present food education event and questions about diets for children collected in a free-description style included: <The event has been informative, as I have learned things that I did not know> and <We have enjoyed the stamp rally>. As a research/education institution, we will collect and provide data that can be utilized for food education, while promoting such education through collaboration with community residents.
