Abstract

This study examined the third person's person perception toward would-be lovers and rejectors in unrequited love, and relationships between person perception, romanticism, and experiences of unrequited love. In a questionnaire, each subject read a fictional scenario describing an unrequited love story, and then completed measures of person perception (intellectual evaluation: IE, dynamicism: DY, social evaluation: SE) toward stimulus persons (SPs: would-be lovers and rejectors), their own romantic love attitude, and their own experiences of romantic love. One-hundred seventy undergraduates (83 males, 87 females, mean age 19.71) completed the questionnaire. Analyses showed following results that; (1)Would-be lovers were evaluated DY higher, although IE lower than rejectors. SE of male would-be lover were evaluated lower than other SPs. (2)Subjects' romanticism were correlated positively with only would-be lovers' IE.(3)Subjects who experienced both situations rated both SPs' SE higher than other subjects. On the other hand, subjects who experienced only would-be lover situation rated rejectors' SE higher, would-be lovers' SE lower.
