Description

This research investigated relationships among evaluations of self and close others, and how these evaluations influence Japanese people’s social adaptation. Two hundred and ninety six university students completed a questionnaire booklet, which consisted of evaluations toward self, their best friend, and their mother or father, and questions that asked students’ social adaptation level, such as health and good relationships. These students then asked their best friend and either their mother or father to complete a questionnaire booklet, which consisted of evaluations toward self and the student who brought the questionnaire. Results indicated that (1) students, their best friends, and their parents all evaluated their close others more positively than themselves, and (2) both positive self-evaluation of self and from their close others had positive effect on students’ social adaptation.
