Abstract
Over-adaptation represents a tendency to always meet the demands or expectations of others. It involves both internal and external aspects. The former includes self-inhibition and self-inadequacy, and the latter includes consideration for others, effort to meet expectations, and desire for appreciation. The present study examined whether the internal aspects of over-adaptation caused the difference in the influence of (1) the external aspects on group identity and (2) group identity on self-esteem. A total of 345 university and junior college students were the target of analysis. Simultaneous path analysis of several groups showed that regardless of the internal aspects, the external aspects affected self-esteem mediating group identity. However, there was no significant difference among paths.
