Abstract

This paper reviews various concepts pertaining to burnout, emotional labor, and similarly related issues. Additionally, it discusses areas for future research and challenges. Burnout and emotional labor are increasingly being regarded as major problems among human service professionals. Their relationship with burnout and emotional labor are multidimensional and complex, where emotional labor, has both positive and negative aspects. Findings suggest that the inability to perform emotional labor despite one’s willingness is inevitably related to burnout conditions. Owing to the limited number of studies on related issues such as compassion fatigue, additional research in these areas is warranted. Examining current findings on burnout, emotional labor, and compassion fatigue, we recommend the use of a thorough, qualitative approach, to describe the content of these factors. Moreover, we draw attention to the concept of mental fatigue to better understand the psychological suff ering among human service professionals.
