Description

In Japan, opportunities for physical exercising and interpersonal interacts in preschool classrooms are on decline and this trend is likely to endanger both the physical and emotional development of preschool children. While “troublesome children” present major challenges in preschools, full-fl edged supportive and educational practices for these children are yet to be established. Therefore, it is important to consider how to assess and intervene in order to promote the physical and emotional development of preschool children. To help confront these needs, it is necessary to revise an international diagnostic manual so as to enable a dual diagnosis of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). In the previous version of the diagnostic manual, this dual diagnosis could not be performed, resulting in scarce attention being addressed to the problematic aspects of motor-movement and motor coordination among children with ASD. However, since the revision has become available, these problems, especially their impact on the children’s physical and emotional development, have attracted attention among professionals, such as teachers, therapists, and health care providers. The present study is aimed at describing the stages of the so-called “relax-and-step exercise” through an interview with the exercise’s developer himself, a clinical Dohsa-hou therapist. On the basis of interview, we discuss the concrete content of the exercise and several related ley issues in a search for psychological and developmental supportive method for “troublesome children”.
