Abstract

The word association test, regarded as the origin of the projective tests, greatly infl uenced subsequent psychological tests such as the Rorschach test and SCT (Sentence Completion Test). In Jung’s classic word association experiment, patients are asked to give words in response to stimulus words. They are then asked to describe their associations to the words that met the criteria through a recognition test. In the following years, referring to Jung’s methodology, researchers have employed various stimulus words and test methods in their studies. When elucidating the characteristics of a clinical group from stimulus word-response word relationships, responses characteristic to each developmental stage must first be clarified. Although Jung’s (1906) stimulus words are used widely for clinical and experimental studies, there is no list of association norms for the early adolescent stage, which is an important period in terms of development. A list of association response norms is indispensable for word association tests and patient un derstanding. This study thus collected data from 142 adolescent junior high school students on words given in response to stimulus words, and created association norm lists by sex. We believe that this study contributes signifi cantly to fundamental research in the fi eld.
