Description

A help-seeker considers a help-giver’s costs on seeking help (DePaulo & Fisher, 1980). The help-seeker would misjudge the help-giver’s costs. Consequently, it would inhibit the help-seeker from seeking help. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether the perception of help-seekers about the costs attributed to potential help-givers would decrease or not. We conducted an experiment, setting the control and experimental conditions. The participants in the control condition had a chat as usual. They in the experimental condition discussed that ahelp-seeker would tend to overestimate the help-giver’s costs. As a result, participants in the experimental condition have predicted the anxieties of being asked for help lower than those of the control condition for a month. The participants in the experimental condition also have perceived the guilt of rejecting help-seeking lower than help-seekers in the control condition for a month. However, there were no differences in the intention to seek help and the experience of help-seeking between the controlcondition and the experimental condition.
