Research Notes
To train analytical skills of qualitative data, in addition to knowing the procedure of the analysis methods, it is effective to practice data analysis repeatedly and discuss questions raised at the time of the practice. In order to conduct it within limited class hours, it is necessary to shorten the analysis work time and to visualize the analysis process for discussing the way of analysis for all class participants. QDA software is one tool to realize this aim. In order to use QDA software effectively in class, it is necessary to consider the correspondence between each function of the QDA software and the analysis method. In this paper I focus on one major type of QDA software, MAXQDA 12, and explore its functional characteristics through comparison with Atlas.ti7 and NVivo11. Then I examine how the function can be used to shorten the analysis work time and visualize the analysis process. In addition, I explore how MAXQDA12 functions correspond to analysis methods. MAXQDA12 can be positioned between Atlas.ti7, which emphasizes creating concepts from codes of low abstraction, and NVivo11, which intends to classify data by code of high abstraction. From characteristics of basic functions of MAXQDA12, it is considered that beginners can start using the software easily. For shortening the analysis work time and visualizing the analysis process, I give an example of the simultaneous comparison which would be diffi cult to implement in the class when using paper media. Concerning the correspondence of software functions to analysis methods, MAXQDA12 puts importance on organizing codes by layers, which is compatible with those incorporating a deductive approach based on an inductive approach such as the KJ method and the gradual structuring method (Zenji-Kōzōka-Hou).
