This paper examines how a Mongolian woman married to a Japanese man, lives in Japan as a foreign wife and mother; she portrays herself as an individual, using various small stories during the interview, through interaction with an interviewer. The reason I focus on foreign wives, especially on Mongolian women and their position as being a minority in Japan, is that the concept of Multiculturalism has been coming to light in modern Japanese society. I argue that it is important to clarify how the minority members consider their own current situations and position themselves in relation to their environment. To clarify these questions, I conducted active interview research to collect the data of Mongolian wives who are considered to be in the minority, even among the foreign wives in Japan. I applied “positioning”(Bamberg, 1997)and “small stories”(Bamberg and Georgakopoulou, 2008)approach for narrative analysis as methodology and analyzed data from Discourse and Sociolinguistic Perspectives(De Fina and Georgakopoulou, 2012). The results are as follows; 1 It has been revealed that the participant used the small stories to clarify and account her current situation and as a strategy to shift the topic. 2 The positions constructed through the small stories revealed the speaker’s different sense of self such as “the one who chose to be the mother” and “the one who now has been put in an undesirable position due to the policy of the kindergarten system in Japan.” 3 Small stories showed, at first glance, that there can be conflicted identities. However, our close analysis applied positioning theory to the identity and showed that the participant’s identity as a Mongolian woman remained constant. Through the way she positioned herself, “the woman who prefers to be a working mom” reflected the Mongolian way of thinking regarding lifestyles and careers of women. In sum, through the analysis it has been revealed that the most claimed identity, as well as the foreign mother’s wish to be understood in front of the interview, was her claim. Though she can be seen as a stay at home housewife, proper accounts exist behind her current self; therefore, her circumstances cannot be helped.
