Description
This paper examines the poet’s scheme of readers’ reception, focusing on the relationship between the Simon’s song and the scene of the Last Supper in the 2nd book of Vida’s epic poetry, Christias. Referring to an Augustine’s comment on reading Bible, I consider how these two parts work each other. Firstly, I explain some characters of the Simon’s song. This song is a “pseudo-Ekphrasis” and stresses the vividness which poetic languages have, although it is showed without any religious meanings. Taking these characters of the Simon’s song into account, secondly, I try to explain why the Simon’s song is put before the scene of the Last Supper. The connection of these parts makes readers feel the later scene (the Last Supper) more vividly. Through such a poetic description of the Last Supper, the poet leads readers to consider the bread and the wine which they see immediately as Christ’s Body and Blood. Thus the series of these two parts contributes to the God’s presence which readers themselves feel through reading this work.
